Maria Flores, LCAT, ATR-BC

Licensed in the state of New York, and a board-certified art therapist, I have eight years of clinical experience in the mental health field. Having worked with many people from all walks of life, I believe strongly in the collaborative nature of the therapeutic relationship.

I consider it a great privilege to help people reach their therapy goals and feel the positive effects of the work.

Currently accepting new clients.

About Maria (she/her)

Before her decision to become a therapist, Maria had a career as a grant writer in a few of the nation's well-known art museums. She then traveled abroad extensively (mostly in India) as a volunteer, facilitating arts-based projects to raise funds for local community investment. In 2015, she decided to pursue a Masters degree from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Human Development --- a way to deepen her ability to leverage the power of the creative process to heal and help humans in communities. Since acquiring her graduate degree, her professional experience as a therapist includes clinical work in various inpatient, outpatient, and social service settings in NYC. She has worked extensively on inpatient psychiatry units (Bellevue Hospital, New York Presbyterian's Payne Whitney Clinic, and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center) treating individuals with acute symptoms of anxiety, depression, psychosis, personality disorders, and substance use disorders. Maria’s eclectic therapeutic approach has a decidedly humanistic and psychodynamic focus. Today, she offers her expertise solely through her private practice.

Maria is still an active traveler, curious most about places where 'traditional' ways of life encounter rapidly changing societies. She continues to be endlessly fascinated by the ways art has presented itself over time -- throughout the entire timeline of humanity -- as an enigmatic tool of humankind. From her home in Brooklyn, Maria also enjoys camping trips, architectural salvage, and scratchy old types of music and unusual field recordings.
